Old Souks of Tripoli

Tripoli’s old souks have continued their commercial role across roughly eight centuries. Rather than a single market street, they form a network of connected passages and trading areas extending from the river toward the southern entrance around Bab Al Haddadine.

Individual souks traditionally took their names from their main trade. Souk Al Kandarjiyeh was associated with shoes, Souk Al Sagha or Al Zahab with jewelry and gold, and Souk Al Attareen with perfumes, scents and related goods.

This close connection between a market’s name and its craft remains an important part of the old city’s identity, joining historic urban spaces with everyday buying, selling and production.
