Al Mouallaq Mosque
Mahmoud Lutfi Al Zaeem, a prominent figure in Ottoman Tripoli, built this mosque in 1555. It is also known as Al Zaeem Mosque and Al Mahmoudiya, but its most familiar name is Al Mouallaq—the “suspended” mosque.
That name describes its unusual position: part of the building extends above an old street carried beneath stone arches.
The octagonal minaret is especially notable for its shape and carved details. Eight arches support the balcony, and each of the eight sides carries a circular, flower-like motif. Every flower has a different design, giving each face its own decorative character.
