Downtown Tripoli

Tall Square and the streets around it form downtown Tripoli. The district lies between the old city to the east and the modern expansion to the west, linked through Banks Street, the beginning of Azmi Street and the road to El Mina.

Its wider boundaries extend toward Abdul Hamid Karami, or Al Noor, Square in the south and the edges of Zahariya in the north. This central district reflects the city’s modern development from the late nineteenth century, through the final Ottoman decades and the French Mandate.

Its landmarks include Tall Square, the Hamidiya Clock Tower, Mansheya Park, Nawfal Palace, the municipality, Al Tall Al Olya Café and Fahim Café. El Koura Square, Banks Street—Al Massaref—and Azmi Street are also part of this downtown network.
