Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church
The history of Saint Nicholas Church is connected with an exchange of property between Tripoli’s Muslim and Orthodox Christian communities in the early nineteenth century. The old church adjoining Al Ouaisiya Mosque was exchanged for a property in the Tarbiya area, where a new church could be established.
Work on Saint Nicholas began in 1908. The building follows an Eastern architectural arrangement, with a rectangular plan, no domes and four interior divisions.
Its collection of old icons is particularly important. Some were transferred from the earlier church in the old city, including an icon of the Virgin dating to the fifteenth century. When this icon underwent restoration in France, several layers of earlier painted images were discovered beneath its surface.
