Historic Churches of Tripoli

Christian history in Tripoli reaches back through the Roman, Byzantine and Crusader periods. Most of the historic churches standing in the city, however, were constructed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Older traces also survive, including remains associated with Saint John in Abu Samra and Our Lady of Al Hara. Together, these sites preserve different stages of the city’s Christian heritage.

The principal churches and religious sites include Saint Georgios Orthodox Cathedral, Saint Joseph Syriac Catholic Church, Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church, Saint Michael Maronite Church, the Shrine of Our Lady of Younis and Saint Michael Orthodox Church. In El Mina, they include Saint Georgios Orthodox Church, Our Lady of Al Najat, Saint Elie Orthodox Church and the Monastery of Saint Francis of Assisi.
