Historic Mosques of Tripoli

Tripoli’s many historic mosques preserve a major part of its Mamluk and Ottoman heritage. Their architecture ranges from restrained, carefully proportioned spaces to richly decorated buildings whose stonework, domes and entrances are outstanding examples of Islamic architecture.

Taynal Mosque is especially admired for its architectural refinement and ornament. Together with the Al Mansouri Great Mosque and the city’s other religious landmarks, it illustrates the importance of mosque building to Tripoli’s history and urban identity.

The historic mosques include Al Mansouri, Taynal, Al Burtassi, Al Ouaisiya, Sidi Abdulwahed, Al Doubbaha, Al Hujayjiya, Al Attar, Al Tawba, Al Hamidi, Mahmoud Bek, Al Tahham, Al Mouallaq, Argon Shah and Ghazi. In El Mina, Al Ali Al Kabir and Hamidi Mosque form part of the same wider religious heritage.
