Basma El Zein

Dr. Basma El Zein is a Lebanese scientist, inventor, and leader recognized for her groundbreaking work in nanotechnology and sustainable development. Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, she has become one of the region’s most respected voices in science, innovation, and women’s empowerment.

She holds a PhD in nano-optoelectronics with high distinction from the University of Lille, France, and a Master’s in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the Lebanese University. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Basma El Zein has built a career defined by scientific excellence and visionary leadership.

Since 2022, she has served as the General Director of UBT TechnoValley in Saudi Arabia. Under her leadership, the center has become a dynamic innovation hub, attracting investments and advancing the Kingdom’s sustainable-growth goals. Before that, she directed UBT’s Governance and Sustainability Center, aligning university policies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Between 2017 and 2020, she was Dean of Scientific Research at UBT, where she strengthened research frameworks and encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration. Earlier, at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), she contributed to major advances in nanomaterials for energy applications. Her patent, ZnO Nanostructure by Low-Pressure Pulsed Laser Deposition, marked a milestone in renewable-energy materials.

Recently, Dr. El Zein filed a U.S. patent for a Flexible Smart Insole for Diabetic Foot, a 2.5 million-dollar project designed to detect and prevent ulcers. Her research continues to push the limits of 3rd-generation solar cells and energy storage innovation.

Her achievements have earned recognition from WIPO, Reuters, and leading global institutions. She was named one of the Top 10 Most Influential Women Leaders in Nanotechnology. Additionally, she has received honors such as the Makkah Excellence Award, the Woman of Achievement Award, and the International Businesswomen Award.

Beyond research, Dr. Basma El Zein is an advisor, consultant, and mentor. Her expertise spans ESG, renewable energy, climate change, and economic development. She believes that science must serve society, a principle captured in her motto, “Discover, Transfer, Impact.”

Through science and leadership, she continues to empower women, inspire youth, and redefine innovation across Lebanon and the world.
